Arboretum, the award winning, family run garden centre based in Carlow has officially launched its ‘We only have one planet’ initiative ahead of World Earth Day, which takes place this Sunday the 22nd of April. Stemming back to 1970, World Earth Day was born to demonstrate support for environmental protection and raise awareness of global environmental issues, with more than one billion people worldwide expected to take part in the celebrations.

This year, to mark the occasion, Arboretum Garden Centre in Carlow has pledged to donate a tree to each of the 44 local schools, calling on teachers and families of pupils to help educate young people on the importance of planting and caring for trees. The resulting project that best demonstrates a clear understanding of why trees play such a profound and vital role in our world, will also win a raised planting bed, designed by the Arboretum team, for their school.

The first tree of the Arboretum ‘We Only Have One Planet’ campaign was presented to pupils of Leighlinbridge National School by Eamonn Wall, Horticulturist with Arboretum at a photocall recently (Friday 13th April).

Commenting at the launched Eamonn said: “We are delighted to be here today at Leighlinbridge National school to launch the Arboretum ‘We only have one planet’ campaign. From a very young age I have been passionate about nature and the environment, so passing on a few tips to the students is a delight. Sometimes we forget about how the universe works, for example in just one year a mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen as 10 people inhale, it’s really fascinating. It’s said that the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best is now ”

Principle of Leighlinbridge National School, Orfhlaith Mealy said; “The school is delighted to be part of this great initiative. It’s our job to encourage and educate our pupils on things that really matter. The environment is a current conversation, not just within our school but also within the Irish media and households nationwide, which is great. We look forward to caring for our tree and welcoming it to our schools community. I hope everyone takes something from this unique experience, thanks to Arboretum.”
